Ways to Stop Laptop Overheating If Cleaning Dust Doesn’t Work

Posted by   on

Laptop Overheating Problems

Laptop overheating is quite common! It could happen because of dust, failure of fan, heat-sink and many more reasons. But, laptop heating does not only depend upon intensive, heavy software graphics installed in the laptops.

Due to overheating, your laptop can freeze, restart or even shut down in the charging mode. The foremost solution of the same is to remove dust or clean dust from the laptop heat sink. If this also doesn’t work then there are other solutions as well.

Usually after cleaning dust from the laptop it doesn’t get heated. But, if the laptop is older one then the problem may still persist. To fix it you can:
  • Update BIOS
  • Reset fan settings (CMOS)
  • Replace CPU cooling fan & GPU cooling fan
  • Try out a branded thermal pad
Now, before going for other quick solutions to stop laptop overheating we must understand its two kinds. Your laptop generates overheat when any component gets heated. This is basically caused by GPU (Graphics Processing Unit) or CPU. The second kind could be when the overall temperature inside your laptop increases.

Inside heat generation is due to HDD and laptop battery. In most of the cases, component-specific heat is the reason that remains the same even after the cleaning process. Below, we will make you understand what are the remedies for GPU and CPU overheating?

If CPU Overheats:

In case the reason is because of CPU then the simplest method is to replace the same. By replacing the CPU, heating can be controlled. If this doesn’t work then change the SMD’s electrolytic capacitor. It is present in the CPU core voltage VRM section. You can also try by replacing PTH which is a non-SMD capacitor present near socket of the CPU.

If GPU Overheats

If you notice that laptop gets hanged or restart frequently then it can be because of GPU overheating. As soon as GPU gets down then you can reflow the chip. Most of the manufacturers often use a “smart fan circuit” for the laptop cooling fan.

Through this, the speed of the fan can be easily controlled. In a new laptop, the GPU is new hence the fan keeps the temperature of the laptop down or controlled but with time it gives a low performance.

Here what you can do is just open the smart fan controller circuit and disconnect the PWM controller pin! This will easily prevent the laptop from overheating and getting damaged.
